The Coven of Danu

The Coven of Danu was founded in Yule in 1981 and has been in continuous existence ever since.  It follows the Mohsian Tradition and is the oldest Mohsian coven in existence.

The Mohsian tradition is a composite tradition that is comprised of Gardnerian, Alexandrian, 1734, Plant Bran and Boread.  The tradition began in Southern California in the late 60’s and early 70’s when initiates of the various traditions sought to combine their respective traditions into something uniquely suited to the American temperament.  They cross initiated each other into their respective traditions and put together what became the Mohsian tradition with its own Book of Shadows.

It follows the basic Gardnerian format of having a three-degree initiatory system and has esbats at the Full and Dark Moons.  It also celebrates the eight Sabbats of the traditional Wheel of the Year.  It is oath bound, lineage based, follows the Mysteries and all initiations are done cross gender.

One of the areas of emphasis for the coven is that all members are expected to dedicate themselves to a program of personal growth and empowerment.  As part of that process people who come into the coven are expected to take on certain roles at the appropriate times.  This may be something as simple as calling a quarter, or as involved as acting as a priestess or priest for a ritual.  This is a part of the growth process.  The coven has a high priestess and a high priest but, when a person is ready, she or he may step into that role for an esbat or a sabbat.

In order to prepare a potential candidate an Outer Court program of study is in place.  This will give the candidate a basic understanding of the craft, both practical and experiential.  The route for acceptance is to, first, fill out an application and, secondly, go through an interview.  The purpose of this is to determine if there is a good “fit” between the candidate and the coven.  The candidate also must decide for herself or himself if this is the right path to follow.

The Coven of Danu is committed to providing the potential student with an ethical framework for personal growth and development.  It is expected that applicants have a balanced and mature outlook on life and be willing to apply themselves to the task of self-discovery and personal growth.

May the Gods guide you on your path.
